LINKEDIN GOT REVAMPED, AND IT'S MAKING ME MAD
One of the things I love about working in digital is the pace of change and the fact that websites, platforms and tools evolve and improve constantly.
That is until something you use very frequently gets revamped and stops being as useful.
You may be able to think of some examples straight off the bat, but I’m thinking specifically about LinkedIn and their recent interface ‘revamp’, which they’ve just about finished rolling out to some 467 million members.
I’m connected to a fairly substantial number of people, and I am seeing more and more updates posted about this look and feel roll-out. Some of my connections are of the opinion that ‘it’s about time’, but in the main, the flavour of feeling has been leaning towards the negative.
The main bone of contention appears to be an apparent loss of some features / functionality, and I have to say, I’m in this same camp. (Oh yeah, anyone notice the complete inability to login with your totally correct login details last week? LI was breaking left, right and centre.)
I manage a number of LI accounts, and knew the old interface inside out - so not being able to find certain things / complete certain actions has been immediate and detrimental.
Let’s 'walk through' a session and see what’s changed
They’ve welcomed me to my new look profile – interesting.
NoTHING'S showing me where things live now though
No quick pop-up demos or anything - I’m just left to get on with it.
Ok so, let’s try and ease into this…let’s post some content. Ok, seems pretty similar to before. Fine.
Now let’s share this status update out to my groups.
Oh wait, where’s thAT TOOL gone?
There’s no pop-up window allowing me to bulk share my status update to all my groups.
How do I do that now? I’m left to post them all in manually via opening up each group homepage, that's how.. A great use of my time. Thanks LinkedIn.
Let’s do some admin on the groups I manage now, and deal with any pending members / posts requiring moderation..
Oh wait, where’s the 'my groups' page gone?
It's living under ‘Tools’ and not ‘My Network’ which seems pretty stupid. ‘My Groups’ is not a tool is it? It just doesn’t make any sense at all.
Now I have to retrain myself to click somewhere counter-intuitively in order to access it.
Next, let’s do a check of the company channels I manage.
Oh wait, how do I find this?
It’s sitting under my profile drop-down – one of the only drop-downs on the top level nav menu now. So fine, click that – and it opens a new window – but why a new window?
Hang on, even though I’m an admin for this page, I have to make an extra click to get the admin view. Ugh.
Let’s pin that last update to the top.
Right, so I’ve pinned it to the top, but I need to unpin it now as I’ve realised I’d be better off pinning another update instead.
There’s no 'unpin' button ANYWHERE. Great.
I’ve sponsored an update too. Let’s see how that’s getting on.
Oh FGS, it’s asking me if I want to sponsor that update i've already sponsored.
But it’s giving me figures about how that sponsored update’s going? What is going on, Linkedin?!?
Finally, let’s take a look at my newly-made connections - I was going to send a DM to a few of them about the new paper we’ve just released.
URGH, I can’t 'tag' my contacts anymore.
To summarise, it’s been a bit of a frustrating experience adapting to the new look and feel. And if digital marketers like me are finding this, god knows what the rest of the population must be experiencing.
"Did you actually do any user testing before you went live with all this?"
Come on Linkedin - sort it out!
Update: Did you share my article on LinkedIn? Guess what? I can't see who shared it thanks to this bonkers revamp. *sarcastic 'thumbs up' gesture*
